My Anam Cara Missy

“The sense of smell includes the sensuality of fragrance, but the dynamic of breathing also takes in the deep world of prayer and meditation, where through the rhythm of the breath you come down into your own primordial level of soul. ” ~John O’Donohue

Today I was watching Missy sniff the air again.  I get jealous of her.  Her ability to sniff so intensely…

I took to the dunes to sniff and write.  Which I did do.  With some vials of perfume materials, I did Plein Air blending (on my wrist) then wrote a little story about these scents.  (I’m working on a piece about perfume as theatre).

But a lot of the time I just admired Missy enjoying the dunes…

Randomly, I am reminded about John O’Donohue’s book, Anam Cara, and I pulled it out to share a quote with you, dear Reader.  A quote about Fragrance and Breath.

John O’Donohue was a Irish poet, author and priest and I strongly recommend his writings if you are not familiar.  His book  Anam Cara explores friendships, love, states of being, and what it is to be human.

Synchronistically he mentions the very thing I was marveling over.

From Anam Cara

“The sense of smell or fragrance is deft and immediate…  Animals, of course, work wonderfully with the sense of smell.  To take dogs for a walk is to realize how differently they experience a landscape.  They are glued to trails of scent and enjoy a complete adventure, tracing invisible smell pathways everywhere.  Each day we breathe 23,040 times; we have 5 million olfactory cells.  A sheepdog has 220 million such cells.  The sense of smell is so powerful in the animal world because it assists survival by alerting the animal to danger.  The sense of smell is vital to the sense of life.”

O’Donohue continues,

“..breath is sister of spirit.”

And then linking fragrance and breath to spirit.

“The sense of smell includes the sensuality of fragrance, but the dynamic of breathing also takes in the deep world of prayer and meditation, where through the rhythm of the breath you come down into your own primordial level of soul.  Through breath meditation, you begin to experience a place within you that is absolutely intimate with the divine ground.”

Isn’t that brilliant?

I have no real point to make here.  Just wanted to share.

Mothers Day Love!

Sparkle and Shimmery scent of Petitgrain, Bergamot, and Haute Lavender…
It is summer and we sit under the Oaks.
On a swing seat drinking wine in the middle of the afternoon
“Isn’t it close enough to 3:00?”

Happy Mothers Day

A word-scent linked portrait of my mother. The inspiration for my perfume, Anam Cara.

Long ago ~ Anam Cara Base Notes

Warm grounding Sandalwood and Vanilla…
Staring into the grass.
Raggedy Anne doll by my side.
My mother, the artist, is near,
Under the oaks, drawing.
She has stayed home to be with me.
I feign sick just to be with her.
Potent scent of Fossilized Amber…
Her drawing,
A portrait of me,
I have the striped legs of Raggedy Anne.
She creates,
I marvel in awe
"How does she do that?"
Patchouli, the earthy unconventional…
She lets me run wild through forests and climb pyramids.
Viewing the world through her eyes,
Eyes filled with curiosity and humor.
Her mermaid mural on the washroom wall of my childhood home.

Not too too long ago ~ Anam Cara Heart Notes

Sweetness of Bulgarian Rose…
I do really, really, stupid things.
Haunt questionable neighborhoods,
Make bad choices.
They are barely mentioned.
Spicy Clove and luscious Orange Blossom…
A heady period
Of shared African dance classes,
Performance art collaborations.
She plays Shaman.
Her 'Lowly Potato' soliloquy steals the show.
Rich comforting Coffee aroma…
Now I am the mother and teacher.
Frequent, lengthy, excruciating stretches of distressing chaos.
“First there must be chaos, then art.”
We laugh over commiserative cups.
And 'chaos first' becomes my mantra.
Delivering her Soliloquy at “The Cocktail Party”  A performance piece happening created by Somebody’s Daughters.  I am the blonde with the feather duster in my face.

Sparkle and Shimmery scent of Petitgrain, Bergamot, and Haute Lavender…
It is summer and we sit under the Oaks.
On a swing seat drinking wine in the middle of the afternoon
“Isn’t it close enough to 3:00?”
We reminisce.
When her stories get lively
I pull my legs up under me,
And let her push.
And she pushes us with gusto.
Legs matching the exuberance of words.
Her spirit shimmery
Our friendship sparkles.

Fae on Friday – Gnomes and Friendships!

“A friend is a loved one who awakens your life in order to free the wild possibilities within you.” ~ John O’Donohue

Happy Fae on Friday!

Today I am thinking about friendships, new and old.  Their treasure…

Writing from Maryland where I am visiting with long-time friends and where I met these gnomes in the homes of a new faerie friends.  I felt a tiny (just a teeny-tiny bit) bit guilty running off in the middle of the week to play when I maybe should have been working…

But I was reminded how important it is to connect and savor the friendships.

Coincidentally, I was working on the description and art for my soon to be released perfume Anam Cara (April 24th and 25th).  Which means soul friend from the Celtic tradition.  The poet and philosopher, John O’Donohue, writes rhapsodically about the meaning of Anam Cara in his book of same title.

Here are a couple of pics from my wild gnome day of friendship and Anam Cara…

A beautiful Family home turned bed and breakfast.  I loved touring the rooms – beautiful!

More new friends.
My new friend, Rosie, wandered off to pasture on her own.

When we return, Maryland Faerie Festival‘s Unicorn is neighing a hello to Rosie.  (click here to find out about the festival.)  Or read about it in my blog – click here Maryland Faerie Festival 2015.  Can you see her on the left?

May your days be filled with friendship and love!  And share this blog with your Anam Caras!

What I Did On My Social Media Vacation

Some moons ago I took a couple weeks off of the blog and social media which turned into many moons more than two weeks worth.  Now even this update blog is many moons overdue.  Oops.  I have missed writing and dreaming stuff up here and interacting on the FB.  But I did get lots done.  Here is some of it.

I Opened an Etsy Store Called Lost Antiquities Found

No, it is not yet my perfume store…  Sigh.  But more on that in a sec.

This is a venture to find homes for many of the delightful plunders my parents curated during their extensive travels from the 1960’s though present.  I hope you have fun looking at these treasures.

You can check out the store by clicking here.  And read more about it by clicking here on this site.  And keep checking back cause I am still adding to it.

Here is a pic of my parents.  It’s one of their favorites.  And mine too.

Deb and Bob Stelton circa 1990’s

Here is my son’s room turned into an Etsy store while he is away at school.  Please buy it all so he will have a place to sleep during Thanksgiving break.

I am getting closer with the Verdant Faerie Scent Salon!

Totally cracked myself up staying up super late one night making a big shopping list of all the oils and absolutes I need to produce a bunch of bottles of magic juice.  That which made me laugh so hard I nearly peed myself was the outrageous cost!  Ah well, keeping the faith.  It will manifest.

I Realized Something About Gratitude

When we feel gratitude we raise our own vibrations AND the vibrations of others.  And experiencing the feeling of gratitude is allowing yourself to feel the pleasure of those good things we are grateful for.  To feel pleasure is the expression of gratitude.  It is a celebration of the abundant beauty of life.

In the past I have sometimes wanted to be grateful or even felt I should be grateful, which externalized gratitude.  It put gratitude outside of me and almost made me feel guilty for not feeling gratitude without telling myself I should be feeling grateful!

But allowing myself to feel the pleasure, to let it well inside of me, is what I believe it’s really about.

Try it and tell me what you think.  Get still, take some nice deep breaths, close your eyes, and pick a single thing in your life that delights your being, hold it in your heart,  and let yourself feel into it.  Let the feeling grow and expand.  Revel in it, go orgasmic crazy with pleasure.  Take another deep breath and hold on to the feeling.  Open your eyes.  Is the world a little more sparkly and vivid?  Are you ready to go about your day a little lighter?

peace y’all
